2. Sketches. I begin by sketching ideas very loosely on paper using a drawing pencil. I find that drawing by hand is a good way to put my brain in a creative mode; things can happen serendipitously that don't occur using a computer, and I believe there's a better connection to the unconscious mind when drawing by hand—there is a feedback from the pencil and paper to the brain that is lacking when handling a mouse. After some initial brainstorming, I move to the computer fairly early, because the very geometric design of the compass rose is much easier to create on the computer.
