3. Playing Around. Using Adobe Illustrator, I begin playing around with the compass shapes, trying different angles, mirror images, cropping, etc. This is an exploratory phase, to discover what the shapes can tell me. The star-within-a-circle has seemingly infinite variations. It can be star-like, flower-like, and stylized in any number of ways. I also try a sailboat shape, because the owners of the business are both interested in boating. A literal interpretation of the compass rose may not be the only option.
